Starts on New Enterprise Facility
Creggan
Enterprises Limited (CEL) is pleased to announce that work
has commenced on its latest project to generate business
opportunities for the area and has secured EU Peace II and
International Fund for Ireland (IFI) funding totalling £268,835.
Through its own resources, CEL will invest an additional
£170,000 to transform part of the former United Technologies
factory, which has become a blot on the Creggan landscape,
into a modern micro-enterprise facility.
The project will help create around 11,500 sq ft of flexible
workspace provision that will stimulate investment, encourage
local entrepreneurship and enhance job creation –
all contributing towards the sustainability of the local
economy.
It is envisaged the new development will be completed within
six months. It will create up to 25 jobs during the construction
phase and facilitate the development of three new business
start-ups and 20 new jobs.
Speaking at commencement of the building phase, Conal McFeely,
Development Executive, CEL, said: ‘At the heart of
CEL’s agenda is a commitment to meet the economic
requirements of Creggan, which has been blighted by decades
of conflict, market failures and urban decline. We will
use this funding to tackle the issue of joblessness within
the area and allow CEL to remain at the forefront of community
regeneration by providing pathways to inclusion through
economic development.’
The Board of CEL, on behalf of local residents, acknowledges
the support of the EU Peace II Programme, DETI and IFI in
recognising the importance of this initiative in advancing
the economic and
social wellbeing of Creggan.
